Gardnerville, Nevada… “Welcome to our town!” HistoryThe first-known inhabitants of the region currently known as Nevada were Native Americans of the Southern Paiute, Northern Paiute, Shoshoni, and Washo tribes. The first permanent non-native settlement known of in Nevada was Mormon Station, founded in the area known as Genoa, just 8 miles from present-day Gardnerville. Mormon Station was established in 1850. Before long, other Mormon settlements were established throughout the surrounding area. It is said that some political controversy arose between the Mormons and miners in the area. By 1857, most of the Mormons vacated the area when nearby Salt Lake City, Utah was threatened by the possibility of federal troop invasion. In 1879, the town of Gardnerville was founded by a man named Lawrence Gilman. Gilman moved the Kent House from nearby Genoa to this area onto a piece of land on the Carson River. He named the town after the previous owners of the land, John and Mary Gardner. Today, Gardnerville has grown into a flourishing modern town that welcomes you to feel right at home!
